Police officer injured after getting dragged 50m by man who drove off during traffic stop in Geylang 

A traffic police officer was injured on Monday afternoon, November 12, after he got dragged 50 meters by the car of a man whom he had pulled over for an inspection. The 35-year-old man, who is also suspected of trafficking drugs, was later arrested for committing a rash act that endangered the life of a police officer.

On Monday, at about 2:50PM, a man who was using his mobile phone while driving along Geylang Road was pulled over by a traffic police officer for an inspection.

In a bizarre turn of events, while the officer was conducting the check, the man unexpectedly drove way, dragging the traffic officer along with the car for quite a distance before the officer fell on the street.

“During the check, the suspect drove off suddenly and the officer was dragged along for about 50 meters, before falling onto the road,” another media source quoted the police as saying.

After being dragged by the man’s car for about 50 meters, the traffic officer managed to disentangle himself and he fell on the road, sustaining multiple abrasions and a fractured right ankle.

He was later brought to a hospital for treatment by concerned onlookers and members of the public, who were later thanked by the police for helping the injured officer.

The police expressed their strict, no-tolerance attitude toward the harming of one of their own.

“The police have zero tolerance towards such brazen acts which threaten the safety of our officers and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law,” said the police.

Police investigations eventually located the man’s car, which he had abandoned at a car park along Toa Payoh Lorong 4, at around 5:10PM on the same day.

The man was finally arrested along Jalan Loyang Besar at just after 2AM on Tuesday morning, the day after the incident. In his possession were suspected drugs and drug-related materials, which were seized by the Central Narcotics Bureau.

Strict investigations into the case of a rash act endangering the life of a police officer are currently ongoing. Additionally, he will be charged with drug trafficking under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

One thing is for sure, driving off suddenly during a police check is a definite sign of guilty behaviour.
