Calvin Cheng says the PAP risks “overplaying the politics of dominance”

With comments that come in light of a recent debate between Workers’ Party Chief Pritam Singh and People’s Association Grassroots Adviser Chua Eng Leong, former Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) Calvin Cheng noted that the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) should tweak some of their political tactics.

He wrote, “The PAP must be aware that some political tactics that worked in previous generations will not go down well with a more educated electorate”.

Cheng was referring to Chua’s rebuttal to Pritam Singh from the PAP regarding the delay in the completion of a Barrier Free Access Ramp.

He wrote, “Good to know it was completed on time”.

Cheng quoted Chua Eng Leong, who wrote that there should not be a difference between the People’s Association (PA), Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC) in the ward, which answers to the People’s Association (PA), and the Workers’ Party MP, as long as they serve with their hearts.

“I have to disagree. The Workers’ Party MP is the elected member of Parliament who won the election fair and square. His/her voice should carry more authority than unelected representatives”, Cheng wrote.

He went on to add, “The PAP must be aware that some political tactics that worked in previous generations will not go down well with a more educated electorate. I do believe that the PAP is still the best choice. But in pushing to win everywhere, they risk overplaying the politics of dominance”. /TISG
