Frozen 2 breaks box office

For the past few weeks, the box-office has seen lacklustre responses from movie-goers. Some movies haven’t been doing well at all.

Gemini Man grossed $US171 million with a $US 138 million budget, Terminator:Dark Fate grossed $US249 million with a $US 196 million budget, Charlie’s Angels grossed $US43 million with a $29 million budget and Doctor Sleep grossed $US62 million with a $US45 million budget. These films missed their marks at the worldwide box office rating.

In 2019, it appears that movies like Terminator, Charlie’s Angels and Doctor Sleep are less attractive.

As for Disney’s Frozen, that’s a different story altogether. The sequel to Frozen hit the big screens over the past weekend, scoring positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Frozen 2 got 75% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 6.7/10 and 94% audience score on the same site. The movie-goers went to see Frozen 2 unlike Dark Fate and Doctor Sleep which also garnered positive reviews.

Frozen 2 grossed $US 127 million in the US and $US223.2 million outside of US for a global cumulative of $US350.2 million.

The sequel is now officially the highest-grossing opening weekend worldwide for an animated film of all time, surpassing Toy Story 4’s $US244 million and 2019’s The Lion King’s $US 245 million.

Both Toy Story 4 and The Lion King grossed more than $US 1 billion at the global box office by the end of the run. Frozen 2 is likely to hit the coveted $US 1 billion club.

Building up the momentum in the coming weeks, observers expect the film to make close to $US 1.6 billion by the end of its run which is roughly $US 330 million more than its original.

For now, Frozen 2 will be competition-free for one more week. On December 5, the release of Jumanji-The Next Level may be a huge hurdle for the animated film to overcome.
