Meet XPhone, a blockchain-enabled smartphone by PundiX

XPhone will enable users to make calls, send messages, and transmit data via a fully decentralised blockchain network

Singapore-headquartered blockchain company PundiX today announced that it has “successfully” created a blockchain-based OS and communication protocol for mobile devices, by unveiling a smartphone called XPhone at the XBlockchain Summit in Bali, Indonesia.

The XPhone will enable users to make calls, send messages, and transmit data via a fully decentralised blockchain network, the way they do with regular smartphones available on the market today.

Built upon Android 9.0, the XPhone OS is currently available for phone manufacturers for testing with the XPhone itself set for launch in Q2 2019.

In a press statement, PundiX says that “unlike other blockchain-powered phones still in development,” XPhone can operate independently of centralised carriers.

Users can route phone calls and messages via blockchain nodes without the need for phone numbers; blockchain-based calling and messaging can also be toggled on and off on the phone OS.

The OS is powered by Function X, an ecosystem built entirely on and for blockchain.

Function X also enables users to securely send and receive data “of all kinds” via a new transmission protocol FXTP, while it also features a decentralised file storage system IPFX.

In addition to enabling users to share data securely via blockchain, the system will also enable developers to “quickly and easily” publish decentralised apps via FXTP.

“We see blockchain as being at a similar stage of development to the internet in the early ‘90s; a new kind of network and decentralised protocol like Function X will be transformational to blockchain as the browser was to the internet. For a start, it is putting blockchain in the hands of millions via a smartphone and returning control of their data back to them, but it also answers so many other challenges,” said PundiX Co-Founder and CTO Pitt Huang.

CEO and CO-Founder Zac Cheah also stated that the XPhone has the potential to establish a large global pool of nodes that can be harnessed to help achieve scalability and decentralisation for the broader blockchain ecosystem.

Detailed information about Function X will be available on October 15.

PundiX is known as the developer of blockchain-enabled point-of-sales (POS) solution XPOS.

The company aims to roll-out 100,000 of its devices to the global retail market by 2021; it has already been shipped to markets such as the UK, Switzerland, Korea, Colombia, Taiwan, and Brazil.

It has offices in London, Jakarta, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Shenzhen. and Tokyo.

Apart from PundiX, other companies that have been developing blockchain-enabled smartphone devices include HTC, which is set to launch its blockchain-powered smartphone device Exodus by end of 2018.
