‘Hope he learned his lesson’ — Cyclist flips over for braking too hard on red light

Singapore — A cyclist was caught on camera falling flat head first onto the ground after braking suddenly before a red light.

According to the post uploaded by Facebook page ROADS.sg, the incident happened along Loyang Avenue and Pasir Ris Drive 1 junction on Sept 14 at around 7:30 am.

The video began with a vehicle waiting to turn right at the junction. A cyclist was spotted crossing as the lights turned red on that lane.

As the lights turned green for the vehicle capturing the incident on camera, another cyclist was seen quickly approaching the junction.

The cyclist’s sudden hard braking caused him to flip over to the ground.

With over 93,000 views and 510 comments, the video got netizens talking.

Members from the online community noted that this part of Loyang required extra caution because of the downward slope.

“It seems that the cyclist had no intention to stop but had braked hard because someone was about to cross the road,” noted Facebook user Kevin Koh.

Others hoped that the cyclist learned his lesson from the incident.

“He did the right thing. The leisure cyclists would have been injured, or he would have been injured by the incoming vehicles,” said Facebook user Jac Lyn.

“Give this cyclist respect, and he has hopefully learnt his lesson that he cannot cycle as fast as the change of the traffic lights or out cycle vehicles.”

“Hope he learnt to respect and time the traffic light and journey on the road,” added Facebook user Muhamed Azmi Jumahat.

Meanwhile, in light of the frequent road accidents highlighted on social media involving cyclists and other road users, netizens reminded cyclists to practice defensive riding at all times.

“Cyclist should have ride defensively at all times and anticipated the red light earlier. Cycling is allowed on roads, and the speed limit for all vehicles on the road is the same btw,” said Facebook user Fadzly Othman. /TISG
