HDB resident says bad smell from 5 chickens his neighbour keeps made his daughter refuse to come home from her grandmother’s place

A man complained about one of his neighbours who keep five chickens in cages on the first floor of Block 358 Yishun Ring Road.

The problem is that the chickens are directly outside the man’s residence. The smell and the sounds coming from the chicken are disturbing his family, especially his children, as the cages are outside their bedroom. 

Mr Suhardi said that one of his daughters no longer wants to come home now, choosing to stay at her grandmother’s home because of the intense foul smell from the chickens.

“This has affected my relationship with my family negatively.

The owner has been feeding the chickens leftover food. This causes a very strong and unpleasant smell, especially combined with the chicken’s faeces. On top of that, the leftover food is attracting rats, especially during the night,” he told Stomp.

And while he has brought the matter up to the Nee Soon Town Council, the police and even his MP, nothing changed.

His complaints prompted the authorities to tell the neighbour they need to move the cages, but they have not complied.

No action has been taken against the neighbour so far, even after a warning letter was issued saying the chickens need to be removed by May 1 of this year.

The Nee Soon Town Council, however, told Stomp that the neighbour who keeps the chickens has asked to explore other solutions.

“Nee Soon Town Council believes in taking a compassionate approach towards solving issues for residents. As such, we are attempting mediation between the neighbours. We are also exploring alternative ways for the chicken owner to keep the chickens while also considering the living environment of the feedback provider,” it added.

But Mr Suhardi is unsatisfied with these attempts to resolve the problem.
