The Workers’ Party (WP) has filed a Parliamentary motion to have the Non-Constituency Member of Parliament seat offered to Ms Lee Li Lian be declared vacant and for Associate Professor Daniel Goh to take up the seat.
WP’s chief, Mr Low Thia Khiang filed the Motion on 15 January 2016, announced the Party’s Chaiman, Ms Sylvia Lim. All other elected MPs of the opposition party have seconded it.
The motion is expected to come up for debate late next week.
Meanwhile, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu has slammed former MP Lee Li Lian’s decision to not take up the NCMP post.
Ms Fu said that, “about 15,800 voters in Punggol East had cast their ballots for her. They, along with many other Singaporeans, would want to understand the basis of her decision.”
“Taking up the NCMP seat would have enabled her to participate fully in parliamentary debates, raise motions, and ask questions in Parliament,” added Ms Fu.
Ms Lee had earlier explained why she would not be taking up the NCMP seat.
“Majority of the voters in Punggol East decided to not give me the mandate after 2.5 years, and we must respect this. The NCMP role is better suited for an aspiring MP who has no such experience and should take this up to show how he/she can contribute in Parliament,.” – Ms Lee Lian
