Democratic Progressive Party leader Benjamin Pwee confirmed that he is bowing out of the looming by-election in Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency.
Mr Pwee said, “we believe him to be a very strong candidate with good ground support. We are happy to bow out of this race, and let this be a straight fight between the SDP and the PAP. We wish Dr Chee the very best.”
Mr Samir Salim Neji, the independent candidate who contested in the constituency in the 2015 General Election had also earlier indicated that he will not re-contest the constituency if the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) fields Dr Chee Soon Juan as irs candidate there.
The anchor Minister for Jurong GRC, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, had said that the People’s Action Party (PAP) will field a strong candidate in the single member constituency. It has not revealed who the candidate is. But it is widely expected that the PAP will field its Bukit Batok branch secretary, Leow Boon Swee, as its candidate.
MPs from Jurong GRC have assumed the role of being caretaker MP for Bukit Batok until election is called.
