300 million lives at risk as global hunger crisis deepens, report warns

INTERNATIONAL: Today, the worldwide hunger predicament is getting worse at a frightening rate, with approximately 300 million people staggering on the brink of starvation, according to the latest Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) published by The Guardian.

Monitoring severe food insecurity across 53 nations, the report discloses that 295.3 million individuals — virtually a quarter of the inhabitants in the observed regions — are confronted with high levels of critical food insecurity in 2024. This escalating food insecurity is driven by a lethal mixture of intensifying battles and regional conflicts, climate disasters, and cuts to philanthropic support.

An additional 13.7 million people were strapped into continuing hunger last year, and according to the warnings of trend experts, it is rising beyond control. “Intensifying conflict, increasing geopolitical tensions, global economic uncertainty, and profound funding cuts are deepening acute food insecurity,” the GRFC cautioned in its study.

Gaza, Sudan, and beyond – epicentres of catastrophe

The most severe starvation, categorised by the UN-supported Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) as a “catastrophe,” has more than doubled, affecting multitudes of people in the Gaza Strip and Sudan. More than 95% of those suffering this dreadful level of food deprivation were located in these two areas. In Sudan, where civil war has devastated infrastructure and banished millions of people, starvation has been publicly and formally declared, with over 24 million people now suffering from serious food insecurity.

Circumstances in Gaza have likewise worsened. The failure of an armistice and the sustained barricade on charitable support have left more than half of Gaza’s 2.1 million inhabitants in disastrous food insecurity. “Following the closure of all crossings into the Gaza Strip in early March… food access has been severely restricted,” the report stated. The latest IPC evaluation published Monday established that Gaza’s residents remain at “critical risk” of famine.

Other countries in calamitous conditions include Haiti, South Sudan, and Mali, where continuing undernourishment and food scarcities continue amidst political volatility and aggression.

Climate change and funding cuts amplify the crisis

Furthermore, the report highlights the increasing role of climate change in exacerbating universal deprivation and is compounding the pain and chaos brought about by regional tensions. Severe famines are predicted across East Africa, predominantly in Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya, along with parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan, compromising agricultural production and food accessibility.

Similarly upsetting is the sweeping drop in humanitarian subsidies, specifically from USAID. The sudden termination of assistance initiatives this year has halted food services and amenities for more than 14 million families in helpless countries like Yemen, Sudan, and Haiti. Even before these subsidies were slashed, approximately half of the nations studied were already undergoing severe food issues.

As the world wrestles with economic ambiguity and geopolitical conflict, the GRFC’s results are an unambiguous cue — without vital and continuous global action, the hunger predicament will remain an escalating issue, and millions more will be pushed beyond the edge.
