Shakespeare goes psychedelic: Singapore sets the stage for a bold, groovy ‘Much Ado About Nothing’

SINGAPORE: Get ready to swing and turn through the Bard’s most adored quixotic humor, with a Singaporean twist. From Jun 12 to 22, up-and-coming theatre collective The Winter Players is back with their biggest production yet—a pulsating, historically fluid reconstruction of “Much Ado About Nothing,” dramatised at the SOTA Studio Theatre.

Breathing new life into Shakespeare’s classic tales

Straight from their début as Singapore Repertory Theatre’s Company-in-Residence, The Winter Players infuse new energy into Shakespeare’s definitive story of love, fun, wit, and trickery by repositioning it to post-independence 1960s Singapore, a period of political instability, cultural pride, and rock ‘n’ roll revolution, according to the latest Timeout story.

Directed by the ingenious Marwyn Ho, this production transforms Messina into a vibrant Singapore, where the armed forces return not from combat, but from the trenches of nation-building. And while harmony may be in the air, romantic chaos is never far behind.

Expect ’60s beats, loud repartee, and swinging skirts. This is not your grandma’s Shakespeare. The show is imbued with famous melodies by local legends, including Saloma, The Quests, and Rita Chao, accompanied by lively dance numbers and old-fashioned photographs that resonate with melancholy and national pride.

“We wanted to ask: What if Beatrice and Benedick were sparring at a kopi tiam in 1966?” says director Ho. “What if deception, gossip, and romance played out to the soundtrack of Singapore’s golden age of pop?”

The shows are performed every day at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with special post-show discussion sessions on Jun 15 and 22, where audiences can interact with the company and its creative crew. Each show runs for practically two hours and 15 minutes, including a 15-minute interval.
