Johor secures RM5 billion in potential investment from Singapore working visit across high-tech sectors

JOHOR: Johor has attracted more than RM5 billion (S$1.57 billion) in potential investment from a series of investor meetings conducted during a working visit to Singapore. Interest spanned high-speed optics, health technology, and semiconductor manufacturing, which are sectors that Menteri Besar Dato’ Onn Hafiz Ghazi described as important not just for capital inflows but for the technology, expertise, and employment they bring to the state.

The announcement reflects growing investor confidence in Johor as a regional investment destination, building on the momentum of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

Something to note was a consistent theme across the Singapore meetings, which was workforce readiness. According to Dato’ Onn Hafiz’s translated Facebook update, he noted that investors in high-tech industries are not only evaluating infrastructure and facilities, but they are also looking for confidence that Johor can supply the skilled workers their operations require.

This has reinforced the state’s focus on the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC) as a central pillar of its investment strategy. The Menteri Besar said training and skills development must be anchored to actual industry needs, so that when investment materialises, Johor workers are already equipped to fill the roles created rather than requiring employers to import talent from elsewhere.

The Johor Investment Malaysia Facilitation Centre (IMFC-J) will continue to support and expedite investment facilitation for incoming investors.

Why this matters for Singapore

The RM5 billion in potential investment emerging from a Singapore working visit is a clear indicator of how the bilateral JS-SEZ framework is functioning in practice; Singapore-based investors and companies are actively exploring Johor as a location for high-value industrial expansion, and the Johor state government is meeting that interest at the highest level.

For sectors like semiconductors and health technology, where Singapore’s own ecosystem is well-developed but land and cost constraints limit expansion, Johor’s proposition as a complementary location is becoming increasingly tangible.
