Pillion passenger wearing helmet the wrong way startles onlookers

A pillion passenger was spotted wearing his helmet the wrong way over the weekend, startling passers-by and other drivers on the road.

One fellow commuter shared a photo of the pillion on Facebook, gobsmacked that the passenger had inserted his head through the side opening of the helmet instead of wearing it properly.

Interestingly, the motorcycle rider is wearing his helmet correctly. It is unclear whether he did not inform his passenger on how to wear his helmet or whether he did and his passenger just refused to wear it the way it was meant to be worn.

Although the passenger’s error is hilarious for onlookers, adorning helmets the proper way could make the difference between life and death for motorcycle riders and pillion passengers in the event of a traffic accident.

The Traffic Police has cautioned that motorcycle deaths and injuries are on the rise, when revealing traffic statistics last year. It reported that on average, one rider or pillion passenger is killed or injured every two hours. Mr John Chan, the Deputy Commanding Officer of the Traffic Police’s Patrol Unit said:

“Motorcyclists often suffer serious injuries or even death during accidents as they are not protected by the shell of their vehicles. On the contrary, heavy vehicles have higher propensity to cause severe hurt or fatality whenever they are involved in accidents. In this aspect, heavy vehicle drivers must do their part, such as checking their blind spot and not speeding.”
