President of the United States of America (POTUS) Donald Trump has cancelled his highly anticipated summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after days of speculation that the historic meeting that was to be held in Singapore on 12 June would not go through.
The POTUS has indicated that he is cancelling the meeting because of the “tremendous anger and open hostility” in a recent statement from Kim. Caliing it a “missed opportunity” and a “truly sad moment in history,” President Trump added in a letter to North Korea that has been made public:
“I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting. Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties but to the detriment of the world, will not take place.”
While the President said that he hoped Kim would contact him, he also added: “You talk about your nuclear capabilities but ours are massive and powerful and I hope they will never have to be used.”
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who read the POTUS’ letter to US lawmakers, said two weeks ago that the US’ goals for the summit is the immediate “permanent, verifiable irreversible dismantling of North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction program.”
