Singapore ― The heroic act of a man who saved a trapped small dog in a canal has garnered praise from netizens.
A passer-by happened to be near Siglap Canal on Saturday night (Oct 9) when he heard faint barking.
The man, named Kelvin Loo, was walking his dog with his wife when they saw a small, white dog in the canal.
Mr Loo shared with Mothership that a pair of cyclists were also at the scene trying to conjure a plan to rescue the stranded dog.
The group found a stairway on the opposite side of the canal and noted they would have to wade through ankle-deep water in the dark to reach the dog.
Meanwhile, a young Indian man identified as Mike passed by and offered to go down.
Despite being warned by Mr Loo regarding the dangers of wading in the dark, the volunteer insisted, noting the dog’s life was potentially at stake.
Mike also reassured everyone that he was used to outdoor activities after training in Pulau Ubin, reported Mothership.
He went down the canal and reached the dog, calming it down first before picking it up.
Mike said the dog was partially blind and seemed very weak.
As the group addressed the situation, a female passer-by got to work trying to find the dog’s owner by sharing the incident in a WhatsApp group chat consisting of nearby residents.
Soon after, the dog’s owner was identified, and she cycled to the canal to pick her pet up.
The woman said it was her first time cycling with her dog and did not realise parting ways with her pet along the way.
She thanked the group for their efforts.
“While Mike was the hero of the day, he was modest and humble. I am glad we have such an everyday hero living amongst us,” said Mr Loo, adding that the volunteer kept downplaying his heroic acts.
It was reported that the canal filled up with water shortly after the dog was rescued.
“Thanks to the humble hero,” wrote Facebook user Julie Chan.
“Hope we can have 1000 people like him,” added another netizen.
It’s not the first time animals have got trapped in Singapore canals.
In September, a man was spotted climbing down a monsoon drain to save a kitten.
His efforts also garnered praise from members of the online community. /TISG
