Is Muralidharan Pillai really interested in the poor and elderly? SDP questions PAP

Mr Muralidharan Pillai, the People’s Action Party (PAP)’s candidate for the looming by-election in Bukit Batok single member constituency, continues to pound the constituency with heavy artillery.
He was joined in the walkabout today by the heavyweights from the PAP – Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State Desmond Lee, Mayor of South West District Low Yen Ling, as well as PAP veteran and former Minister Lim Boon Heng.
At the walkabout Mr Pillai said that his strategy would be to focus on the elderly and the needy.
When Dr Chee Soon Juan, was asked for comments about Mr Pillai’s strategy, Dr Chee said, “when you have MP after MP after MP in Parliament and still these poverty issues continue… how does he (Mr Pillai) bring this issue to his superiors in Parliament? If he was really interested, he would have brought it up a long time ago.”

“We (the SDP) don’t want residents to be dependent on handouts,” said Dr Chee. “We want to empower them. That’s the difference. The more they are dependent on handouts, the more the power can be used as an overlord to them.”
Dr Chee is the secretary-general of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and the party’s candidate for the by-election in Bukit Batok.
