One controversy after another…and the Little India riot story just refuses to disappear. The new issue is human rights organisation Maruah’s difficulty in finding a venue for holding an event titled Foreign Workers, Justice and Fairness.
At practically the 11th hour, Ananda Bhavan restaurant at Syed Alwi Road, the venue for the event, told Maruah that they can’t oblige. And this after money was paid and posters printed.
A Maruah facebook posting said : “Yesterday evening (Dec 21), we received a call from the restaurant’s management to inform us that the police had called them, asked them about the event…”
Maruah responded by saying that the event was being held according to the rules of the law. Ananda Bhavan said it will get back after talking to the police. ‘”Near midnight, Ananda Bhavan sent a SMS stating that ‘after consulting the police and getting advice from the Board’, they had decided to cancel the booking and would refund our money,” the posting said.
The event will now be held from 7 to 9 pm today at the Marketing Institute of Singapore, 410 North Bridge Road (opposite the National Library).
