Roy Ngerng has agreed to pay $150,000 in damages owed to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for defamation, in installments from 1 April 2016 to the year 2033. The 34-year-old will be 52 years of age by the time he finishes paying up the Prime Minister.
Roy Ngerng’s lawyer said that the blogger will start with payments of $100 a month for five years from 1 April 2016, and that from 1 April 2021, Mr Ngerng has to pay $1000 a month until the entire sum is paid. If he pays all the instalments on time, Ngerng will be done paying by the year 2033.
Mr Ngerng also has to pay $30,000 for the costs of the Assessment of Damages hearing by Wednesday, Mar 16.
The blogger’s lawyer further said that in the agreement made with PM Lee’s side, Mr Ngerng need not pay any interest if he makes his payments on time, but if he fails to make any of the installments on time, he breaches the agreement and the full amount outstanding plus Court Judgment interest will be immediately payable.
Mr Ngerng’s lawyer, Mr Thuraisingam represented blogger on a pro bono basis.
