Soft, wet ‘smelly fish sandwich’ assault case goes to court in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a place where many incredible things happen on a daily basis. But no one would believe that one day, an innocent sandwich would become a weapon that would expose the country’s not-so-democratic leadership!

A police officer in Hong Kong testified that a ‘smelly fish sandwich‘ lobbed by a pro-democracy activist tainted his uniform, describing the ‘projectile’ as ‘wet and soft’, according to AFP.

While the police officer made it sound like a ‘sexting’ probe, the accused – Avery Ng Man-yuen of the League of Social Democrats – said AFP, denied one count of common assault with a sandwich at the magistrates’ court hearing.

The pro-democracy activist wanted to hit the former Hong Kong chief executive during last year’s legislative elections but missed and hit a police officer, today pleaded not guilty to assault.

In a Facebook video that was played in court, Ng had described the missile as a “smelly fish sandwich,” AFP reported.

The sandwich was aimed at the city’s then-leader Leung Chun-ying, who was on his way to the polling station.

According to local media reports in Hong Kong, Leung managed to take “evasive action,” against the missile thus allowing the ‘weapon or projectile’ to hit chief inspector Lau Wing-kwan.

Lau told the court he tried to block the sandwich with his arm but didn’t “blame” the city’s former head for dodging and leaving him in the firing line.

“Suddenly I saw an unknown object coming from in front flying towards me,” police officer Lau Wing-kwan told the court as a witness, reported AFP.

“Because the item was wet and soft, after I blocked it, it came apart and parts of it hit my vest.”

Ng was a candidate for the Kowloon West constituency, but failed to win a seat, obtaining only 6,811 votes, according to Hong Kong Free Press.
