In a freak accident, a woman was hit on the head by a wheel chock that went flying at a bus stop along Jalan Boon Lay on Thursday (Apr 14) between 12:12 and 12:40 pm.
A wheel chock is a safety device wedged against the wheels of a vehicle to prevent it from moving accidentally. But somehow the device flew through the air and hit the woman.
The impact was so strong that the victim, 34-year-old Ms Deng, fell down on her right side.
In an Apr 16 Facebook post, her cousin, Chow Yingxiang Melissa, wrote that the blow from the wheel chock injured both sides of her face, her ears, eyes, and neck.
The family is greatly concerned because Ms Deng suffered from internal bleeding in her head and is in the Intensive Care Unit at National University Hospital.
“We have so many questions!,” wrote Ms Chow.
“How did a freaking wheel chock fly up to her head???
Who is the rogue driver that caused this horrific accident!!
Did he know what he did? Or did he run?
How are there no eye witnesses at noon on a workday??
How is the police so slow in identifying the culprit??”
Ms Chow also shared a photo from a story about the freak accident in Shin Min Daily News and asked Facebook users to share her post, as the family needs help in getting eyewitnesses to the incident.
“My cousin is the sweetest girl with the biggest heart. Can she ever go back to old dear self?” she added.
Ms Deng’s brother told Shin Min Daily News that the victim sustained injuries to her ears as well as broken vertebrae when she was hit on her head by the flying wheel chock.
She was unconscious for one full day and regained consciousness by Apr 15, but cannot communicate verbally and can only move one finger so far when asked questions.
Ms Deng is an admin staff at a factory near Jalan Boon Lay. Her family has filed a police report concerning the incident.
Unfortunately, no cameras were nearby that could capture what happened.
“We guessed that the wheel chock must have dropped from a vehicle and ricocheted off the ground, hitting my sister. As the location is an industrial area, we couldn’t find any eye witnesses. Right now, we have a lot of questions that we cannot find the answers to,” the victim’s brother told Shin Min Daily News.
He said that whether Ms Deng will be able to work again or perform her daily duties is uncertain. She is likely to need physiotherapy as part of her recovery.
”Whether it was intentional or not, the person caused harm to my sister and should bear some responsibility,” he added. /TISG
